Another reason to brag about Penticton was our “Welcoming Communities Summit” on June 17 and 18 hosted by South Okanagan Similkameen Local Immigration Partnership at Okanagan College.
We were treated to sessions that included regional history, employment strategies, entrepreneurial opportunities, characteristics of a welcoming community and other workshops with more presenters and great conversation.
I really enjoyed the regional history as I have only been here for two years and Randy Manuel shared what was here before settlers and then what changed locally after settlers arrived as his familial roots go way back.
The characteristics of a welcoming community touched me deeply as Lindsey Fraser spoke of Penticton’s LGBT community support(s) in light of Orlando’s massacre and how the City of Penticton works to ensure that all its citizens feel welcome.
There are many reasons why Penticton is a great place to live and this summit was one more.
Great energy, food and information sharing thanks to Nora Hunt-Haft and the others that helped keep Penticton on the map for new comers of the South Okanagan.
