I want to publicly thank council for voting in favour of the rezoning of 222 Corfield St. South on Wednesday, July 4.
I was present at the final public hearing on June 19 and also at the council meeting on July 4.
It was disheartening to witness the disrespectful behaviour and appalling rudeness of many in attendance on both evenings.
It appeared to me that many didn’t understand the public hearing process nor did they understand that council decisions are not solely based on public input.
While some present believed a democratic process was not occurring, they were witnessing our current system at work.
Only specific topics may be put to public referendum. This rezoning was not one of them.
I appreciated Coun. Mary Beil’s thoughtful summary of the issues and am grateful for a decision which I surmise was based on evidence and compassion rather than fear, misinformation and hysteria.
While I don’t expect one project to solve all problems of homelessness, it’s a significant step forward.
