Re: the article in the May 30 Saanich News, “Saanich may consider roundabout solution” for the Interurban and Wilkinson Road five-way intersection. The best way to rally the troops against this proposal is to liken it to the McTavish Road three circles roundabout. There are a number like that in the UK and they work really well at huge interchanges, including many times larger than McTavish Road … if you follow the rules.
What the public would need to know in considering their response to an Interurban/Wilkinson Road roundabout is that only one, broad, two-lane roundabout is required, and these work really well and can handle high-volume vehicular traffic, including large transports and buses, in a smooth and efficient matter.
Once everyone stopped cursing it, the two-lane Evans Road and Yale Road roundabout in Chilliwack, in a busy light industrial area, convenient to two shopping malls and expanding residential areas, including an on- and off-ramp to Highway 1, works really well and has done for some years.
Anything, almost, would be better than the five-way gridlock that currently jams what is actually a major, though underserved intersection. I look forward to the upgrade.
