Letter: Shift needed to protect heritage

After watching the well known television program from Britain “Escape to the country” it impressed me how the preservation of their heritage buildings is paramount. Throughout Britain country cottages with minute details have been lovingly restored by their owners.

What a sad contrast our municipality of Oak Bay has become. Demolitions are commonplace now and it appears that anything that has an older look is frowned upon and destined to either be floated away to the San Juan Islands or carted off to the landfill.

How depressing the “sold” signs have become, as we know full well the lot will be clear cut and an ugly over-developed property will emerge. Why are we allowing mayor and council to condone this? Where is their promise to protect our municipality they pledged when they were running for election? As evidenced by the packed Oak Bay Watch meeting we are over due for a change, a fundamental paradigm shift in what we value in our neighbourhoods and the people who purport to represent them.
