LETTER: Students shouldn’t have to walk through smoke pit

A letter to the editor by Peter Swann

To the editor:

I was reading an article in the Free Press Nov.22 edition of the approval for cannabis stores in Williams Lake today and my thoughts turned to the needs and rights of my children.

We currently are unable to regulate the sale or consumption of products by youth on public or school property as made clear by the usage levels at or near Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO).

My youngest son began attending high school last Sept. and has been subjected to any number of unknown substances since then at least twice a day going to and from school.

This has been an unfortunately shared experience with our exchange student currently staying with us from Quebec and has left a poor impression for him to bring home… My efforts to rectify this have failed due to the school’s request to have the smoking pit bench put back after I had asked the Village to act, apparently being mistaken in the belief it was on town property.

Now I am left to wonder if the atmosphere of uncertainty over fundraising for “dry grad” will go on as this is the image new students and visitors are presented with year after year.
