Letter: ‘Support those struggling with addictions’

Why can't our city and council have caring approach?

Re: News Views: The moralist.

I read the editorial in Friday’s edition and agree with your views on the need for cooperation between our city and the provincial government on providing housing for the needy here in Maple Ridge.

I was raised in Montreal by two chronic alcoholics. Eventually, my mom had to be housed by social services, as she was killing herself with her addiction to alcohol.

The city understood the need to help my mom out and not just cast her off to fend on her own.

She did very well in the housing and care program, which is one of the best in Canada. Her health improved and she was able to manage her alcoholism with the support of the staff in this situation. They gave her the care and support that she desperately needed, and I thank them with all my heart my heart for this.

This should be a model for all of us in caring for those who are struggling with addictions. Kudos to the city of Montreal for showing such compassion and understanding towards those in need.

Why can’t our city and council have this same caring approach to the individuals who’re suffering with addictions?

Let’s work together with the province, health authority, and mental health and addiction services on this.

That’s what they are there for, so quit trying to re-invent the wheel and let them do their jobs.
