LETTER: Taking action to end the killing of sharks

Re: Students talk shark finning with Fast (May 21).

After reading about the visit of Abbotsford’s MP to a Grade 8 classroom, I felt like a balloon had just been popped.

Just because the government doesn’t support the banning of shark fin sales in Canada, I would encourage those students and others who oppose shark finning or shark harvesting, to remain positive.  There are many different approaches to take if you are concerned about the future of our oceans.

Boycott restaurants which serve shark body parts.  Take all marine life off your plates.

Join activist groups which stand up for animals/environment (eg. Facebook Vancouver Animal Defense League).  Fundraise for groups you believe in.  Keep watching documentaries which inspire you.

The Canadian government has made many poor decisions in the past, such as putting a $500 head tax on Chinese immigrants, not deeming women as persons, and forcing aboriginal children to attend residential schools.  It was small groups of people who stood up against these injustices and it will be small groups of people who will end the killing of sharks.

Just because a practice is legal, doesn’t make it moral.
