Editor, the Gazette:
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 059 has been cleaned, the extra barbecues taken home, the picnic tables and garbage cans cleared away, the portable toilets picked up and the barriers taken down. You would never know we fed over 400 community members a salmon dinner on June 17.
For some of the members at our branch, we may not be able to aid in some of the recovery phase because of our various ages, but we always seem to be able to put on a terrific meal and turn it into a party.
Thank you to Grieg Seafood in Campbell River for their donation of salmon. Thank you to our entertainment chairman, Everett Baker for bringing us the idea and allowing us to take the donation to the next level for our city in a short period of time.
Thank you to Kasey from Save-On Foods for her awesome cake and cupcake creation. Your hard work paid off and it was truly a highlight of the afternoon. Thank you to Buy-Low Foods, Save-On Foods and Nick’s Feed Store for working your magic with numbers and providing us with superior customer service and product.
Thank you to the Grand Forks Pipes and Drums and Paul Henderson and Company for providing wonderful musical entertainment. Thank you to the Grand Forks Fire/Rescue for bringing the fire truck for the children to enjoy. Thank you to the city for approving our event and delivering picnic tables, garbage cans and barriers on short notice and in a timely fashion. Thank you to Boundary Septic for also providing us with portable toilets on short notice.
Thank you to Kathleen Saylors from the Grand Forks Gazette for coming over early to take pictures of the massive cake with some of our volunteers, then coming back to cover the event. Thank you to Alex Alan Robinson from 102.3 Juice FM for helping to advertise our dinner during his broadcast.
Thank you to whoever brought in and donated the fresh cherries – it happened so fast I didn’t get time to write down your name! Also, thank you to Boundary 841 Air Cadet Squadron who came back from a weekend away and before going home, pitched in on clean-up.
Our branch donated leftover salmon, baked potatoes, coleslaw, buns, sour cream and cake to Samaritan’s Purse as a thank you for all of their hard work in the clean-up of our community after the flooding, which is still going on. Thanks to everyone who donated – $2,300 went to the Grand Forks & Boundary Flood Relief Fund.
But most of all, thank you to a small mighty army of Legion comrades, ladies auxiliary, air cadets and members of the community who came together to volunteer for all the set up, cooking, tear down and clean up. You showed our wonderful city a good time and also just how much you care about them. You can feel very proud of your accomplishments. #GrandForksStrong.
