LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Crosswalks should suit those with vision impairments

Flashing lights hard to see for anyone, says letter writer

To the editor,

I just used the new crosswalk on Fifth near Bruce between the Tim Hortons and the Starbucks. I’m very disappointed at the lack of acknowledgment of people with visual impairment.

The sign says cross when the lights flash, but when the sun is bright, you can’t see the lights, and although I wear glasses, my vision is perfectly functional. There is also no accompanying beep to tell blind people that it is safe to cross.

How can we justify being this ableist in this day and age?
