LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Nanaimo, Cowichan transit services could link their routes easily enough

Letter writer suggests shared bus stop at Oyster Bay

To the editor:

Re: Regions co-operating on bus route to and from Cowichan Valley, Jan. 20.

Although the 53-kilometre planned extension to the local bus service in 18 months’ time is much needed and much-appreciated news, I’m not sure why an easier, cheaper and more immediate solution was not arrived at.

The southernmost bus stop of Nanaimo’s routes stops at Timberlands Road. The northernmost bus stop of Cowichan Valley’s bus service is at the 49th Parallel Grocery in Ladysmith. The distance between them is 9km at most. (I have had to walk those kilometres a number of times on a high-speed and somewhat dangerous highway.)

Here is my suggestion for a compromise stop, that would only add about four or five kilometres to each of Nanaimo’s and Cowichan’s bus networks: Between the two stops is the new Oyster Bay development that has plenty of space to have a bus stop for both networks. I think that would be a good fix until a more thought-out plan ends up being implemented.
