To the editor,
As we begin moving through the holidays during a time of high COVID-19 infection rates, I am aware how many Canadians will be on their own this year. From seniors without family to younger singles living alone, from those isolating for health reasons to those whose families are far away, this will be a particularly challenging time.
For many regular and reserve Canadian Armed Forces members, their service to all living in Canada will take them away from their homes this year. Some will be deployed overseas assisting others around the world while others are deployed across this country, in many cases supporting pandemic response activities. The crew of our own namesake ship, the HMCS Nanaimo, went into isolation in November and will be deployed off our coast throughout the holidays.
While we may not get together this year, we can still connect. The depths of winter are the best time to shine light in the darkness, to reach out with caring, and to express gratitude for what we have and hold dear. So, consider sending a letter, picture or holiday card to a long-term care facility for any resident needing holiday cheer, drop it at the home of an isolated neighbour, or send a message to a member of our military by mailing it to: ‘Any Canadian Armed Forces Member,’ PO Box 5004 Station Forces, Belleville, ON, K8N 5W6.
Happy holidays.
Deborah Hopper, Nanaimo
