LETTER: Traffic issues won’t help waterfront development

C'mon, city council. Trying again to get a project on the beach, haven't we just been there?

C’mon, city council. Trying again to get a project on the beach, haven’t we just been there?

Residents have told council many times that we don’t want huge development on the waterfront. Buildings in the projected development: two four- storey, two six-storey buildings, one eight-storey and a 16-storey building. Rental, residential, office and commercial. We’ve got a lot of commercial property in town that isn’t filled.

Beyond the fact that long-term residents have said “keep within the zoning laws and height restrictions” in the town along the beach, I have many questions for council:

Highway 19A is a horrible mess in front of the construction between Pym and Temple. What are you going to do with construction and traffic at the beach? What roads are you going to build? And those roads need to be built first. Where is the traffic, just for this development, going to go? I already spend way too much time getting from Pym to Shopper’s, Thrifty’s or any business there. Council has talked about diverting traffic away from Hwy 19A, but haven’t come up with anything viable that isn’t going through residential areas, isn’t wide enough, plus no access from there to downtown. Guess I should move all my business to Nanaimo — prescriptions, chiropractor, physical therapy, groceries? Many of us who have lived here many years do use local businesses, but what if we can’t get there?
