Every so often, we plan an adventure vacation to a place we’ve never been. It can be both exciting and scary venturing into the unknown. The first step is always choosing where we want to be and when. Following that is a series of small steps – the preparation necessary to ensure we will have the best chance of success.
When I consider the increasing impacts of climate change and how that will affect our futures, I think there is a case to be made for the vacation planning model.
Again, the first decision is where you want to be in terms of life in a changing environment. What follows then are those series of planning steps, that when completed will presumably find you where you want to be.
The journey toward any destination is certainly easier when you start preparations early. The last-minute rush to preparedness tends to cause high stress and you often forget something in the process.
In the climate change scenario, I find I am already stressed. I know where I want to be in my future, but there seem to be many obstacles: attitudes, policies and current economic models that are making my journey difficult.
All I want to do is visit and live in a place that can sustain me. I was actually considering planet Earth, but the travel alerts have me worried. I was wondering if there are any Canadian leaders who would recommend that destination and assure me there would be a healthy and sustainable environment when I arrive in the future.
If you are considering a vacation, I would recommend you start serious planning now to help ensure you get there.
