Letter: Vanderhoof museum closure lament

I was sorry to read in The Omineca Express that the Vanderhoof Community Museum has closed.

Dear Editor,

I was sorry to read in The Omineca Express that the Vanderhoof Community Museum has closed (“Museum closed, historical society disbanded”, July 27).

Last August I was able to spend time in Vanderhoof, as interim editor of The Omineca Express and The Caledonia Courier. As a long-time history buff, the first place I visited in Vanderhoof was the museum, where I spent a very pleasant hour with then-curator Riley Wallace, who gave me a tour and answered my questions. The B.C. Provincial Police building on the site was particularly interesting, as it featured in two real-life historical crimes I wrote about during my time there.

I enjoyed the “Night at the Museum” event last August; there was something magical about exploring the site at dusk (even the light rain couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of all who attended). Whatever difficulties are facing the museum and the historical society, I hope that they can be resolved, and this wonderful site can be re-opened to the public. The Vanderhoof Community Museum is a gem that needs to be preserved.
