This letter is in response to the letter ‘The world would be better if more women were housewives’, appearing in the Feb. 12 edition of the Hope Standard.

One of the most important jobs a woman can do is anything– anything they want, anything they dream, anything set in their mind. The letter writer speaks to a bygone era where women were forced to do what the colonialist patriarchy made them do, where gender was binary and thought was linear.
As a mom, aunt and friend of other women, I thank the universe that I, my nieces, my daughter and all other folx who identify as women are not forced to do what we don’t want to, but are inspired to do what we can.
Women are allowed autonomous choice over their bodies. That just because we were assigned a gender at birth has no bearing on who we are destined to be or how we identify. Thankfully, there are women who came before me who fought hard for what we have today. I will continue to do the hard work for the women that come after me and stand up against reductive sexist stereotypes. It is the 21st century, after all.
