I know the whole world is taken up by the COVID-19 thing, but we have another pressing problem that the government seems to have conveniently ignored, and that is condo insurance.
By law, strata condo owners must have insurance on their building. I know of a number of residents who are nervous as hell that they might lose their homes because of having no insurance on their condo – and it’s not because they haven’t tried.
They have tried at least a dozen different brokers and no one has come forward with an offer. Not that it’s too high, but no offers at all.
This condo is not the only one in this boat as there have been many articles in the newspapers about this problem.
Insurance is a global business and because they are international, we are being penalized for international problems like fire in Australia, floods in U.K. etc.
I think it is time we turned inwards and throw off the yokes of international corporations.
Our government should start a B.C.-only condo insurance scheme, where we spread the risk only around B.C., not the world.
If they can insure cars, they should be able to insure something more important like our homes.
