I agree with letter-writer Vivian Anderson, as there are definitely too many people feeding the seagulls – and other birds, for that matter – which is becoming a real problem in our small community.
In fact, I have literally seen people throw raw chicken skin out for both the seagulls and crows to feast on, which only encourages them to hang around their food source.
Letter-writer Maren Gailens (Sounds of our seaside, Aug. 18) indicates that if you live by the sea and a train track, you should expect to hear seagulls and the train, but she is missing the point.
The train horns do not have to blast excessively all night when there is no imminent danger, and the seagulls are only now nesting on our roof tops because people keep feeding them!
Our garbage collection is also now seven days a week, which includes organic waste, and quite often I see bin containers left open, which only escalates the problem.
Personally, I find it appalling that our city officials even allow this collection seven days a week, which continues to pollute our environment and will only get worse as our community grows. At the very least they should be imposing garbage collection only on certain days of the week, as it used to be.
The simple message here is that we all have to live together in our small community, and white noise is manageable, so please be respectful of your neighbours’ right to quiet enjoyment by being more mindful of your own actions.
