Re: Unknown sheen in bay, Feb 7.
Our mayor and councillors – as reported in the Peace Arch News over the last while – are concerned about environmental issues in our community and are discussing improvements.
It is obvious to me that we have such issues here in White Rock.
The unknown sheen in the bay – seemingly coming from the City of White Rock outflow pipe located near the foot of Oxford Street – is not the first time the city has had problems with unknown substances coming from this pipe, and the same can be said about the city’s outflow pipe located at East Beach.
Possible pollutants entering our bay through these two outflow pipes could be making major changes to the Semiahmoo Bay ecosystem.
I know pollution to Semiahmoo Bay through the city’s two outflows have been a problem for many years.
With respect to the city seeking feedback on how to spend $13 million, as reported by Tracy Holmes in the Friday, Jan. 10 PAN, my feedback would be a request for the city to employ an environmental employee full-time and to move quickly in placing filters at or near these two city outflow pipes to contain the amount of substances foreign to our environment flowing into Semiahmoo Bay.
