LETTERS: Climate emergency declaration ‘amusing’

I recently read that the City of Surrey will be ascribing to a climate-emergency proposal. I find this amusing when considering that the mayor and council approve of the wholesale clear-cutting of trees, such as now at the corner of 16 Avenue at King George Boulevard, and the same thing happening in the 16300-block of 10 Avenue.

Many acres of timber gone. If the mayor and council are serious about climate change they should at once cease any and all destruction of trees, which cleanse our air and provide oxygen. Profit-driven developers, with the obvious consent of mayor and council, continue to destroy many square metres of foliage to be replaced by buildings, asphalt and concrete.

While on the topic of asphalt, taxpayers should take steps to withhold taxes until the city improves corridors such as 152 Street and 16 Avenue to allow for free flow of traffic, as opposed to the current congestion.

Many homes have been built on the hillside, which was also clear-cut, bounded by 168 Street and Highway 99, 16 Avenue and 26 Avenue.

Profit and greed obviously come before climate preservation?
