LETTERS: Liberals prepared to junk 900 years of judicial practice

Our Liberal MP repeats the PMO talking point, also picked up by most of the media, that there was somehow something wrong in Judy Wilson-Raybould releasing a recording of her conversation with the Clerk of the Privy Council, Michael Wernick.

Leaving aside the fact that the tape allowed the public to hear and assess the truthfulness of her account, versus Wernick’s account, there was a very simple and obvious way to prevent the recording becoming public.

The Prime Minister could have set up a judicial inquiry into the matter.

A judge could have heard all this material in private, and rendered a decision without any of it becoming public.

However, the Liberals have taken great pains to prevent the truth coming out, from refusing any kind of inquiry to shutting down the justice-committee hearings partway through and refusing to allow the ethics committee to even consider the matter.

When the Liberal Party is prepared to junk 900 years of judicial and constitutional practice for tawdry political gain, it is very clear Judy Wilson-Raybould had no alternative but to make the recording public.
