Sooke pensioner concerned with the possibility of a 5.5 per cent municipal tax increase

Re: District council considering 5.5% tax hike (News, March 15) As a pensioner on a fixed income, I am concerned with the possibility of a 5.5 per cent tax increase. “Not being extravagant, but more adaptive to where Sooke is now,” does not bode well as a habit for the future. Perhaps 5.5 per cent is enough to keep up with financial planning if one’s income is $60,000 or more annually, but at $25,000 or less it creates a problem. If continued growth is encouraged, increases will be necessary. As nice as it may be to focus on the town core so that taxpayers can see it looking better, but at the same time whatever happened to the tried and true method of living within our means?
