LETTERS: One article not going to change the truth

Mayor Walt Cobb responds to questions surrounding tourism publication

Re: BC City Guide Williams Lake Listing

In response to the letter to the Editor submitted by Marg Casey in the July 4 edition of the Tribune, I would like to thank Marg for being a proud Williams Lake resident who is as dismayed as we were with the directory listing for Williams Lake in the BC City Guide, published by BC Business Magazine.

City staff did not author or endorse the article. The City is approached by numerous publications for paid advertising opportunities, and we cannot participate in all of them. At that point, we are not included in the review or editing of articles, which is what occurred in this instance.

Despite the unfavourable and inaccurate information included in this guide, we are confident that when visitors come to Williams Lake they will find a friendly, hospitable and vibrant community.

The article could have supported our message that we are incredibly proud of the way our community came together last year to overcome an unprecedented challenge.

It could have stated that Williams Lake is open for business, and that the best thing that people in this province could do to help our region recover is come and spend some of their holiday dollars in our tourism sector, which was particularly hard hit in 2017.

Williams Lake is full of good news stories right now.

We are enjoying a very strong housing market, and an increasing number of professionals and families are choosing Williams Lake for the lifestyle that we enjoy here.

One magazine article is not going to change what we know to be true.

Williams Lake is a great place to visit, and an even better place to live.

We would welcome the publisher to come and see for themselves.

Mayor Walt Cobb
