I was more than surprised when I observed the City of White Rock trees being “butchered” along the bluff in the 15300-block of Marine Drive (Clearing concerns expressed after trim, April 24).
The stability of this acute hillsides land which, by the way, is directly above the BNSF railway should have been determined first.
It is the trees and their root systems that retain the soils of the bank, preventing erosion and thus the possibility of a landslide.
I wonder if the City of White Rock was thinking and involved both an arborist and a geotech, the latter of which determines the behavior of soil materials.
Would it not be ironic that these trees, butchered to improve the ocean view of a few select residents, causes a major rail derailment as a train rumbles past after the trees have died off?
