LETTERS: The Essendon Airport & Shopping Centre Disaster

Definitely time for a re-think on the proposed locations for both Sidney Crossing and the new Community Safety Building.

That was a timely letter from Kerry Finley regarding the similarities between the recent Essendon Airport Shopping Centre disaster in Melbourne and the potential for the Gateway Shopping Centre (and the new Fire Hall).

If you look at the crash diagram on the Melbourne media links you will immediately see the scary similarities of the proximities of the runway, the shopping centre and the highway.

However, one key item Mr. Finley does not mention is that there were only five fatalities because the plane exploded in the middle of the shopping centre at 9 a.m. one hour before it opened at 10 a.m. Any time after 10 a.m., and there would have been a catastrophic loss of life.

Definitely time for a re-think on the proposed locations for both Sidney Crossing and the new Community Safety Building.
