Editor: Re: “Business owners slam ‘cheese-grater’ fence,”

My wife and I went to FIVE Kitchen and Raw Oyster bar to see what the fuss was about.
I must say that Memorial Park is not as bad as I thought it would be. While under construction, I called it the Cement Park. I see now that it is only a semi-cement park with cement stairs wide enough to accommodate throngs with an appreciation of nature in full harness.
As for the fence and the sign, we found them to be a crowning achievement fit for the park below. They aren’t pretty, especially juxtaposed with the natural scene they are blocking.
Over 20 months and millions of dollars later, we have an unnatural park on the ocean blocking the ocean. Must the sign be that big for a park so small?
I must disagree with owner Aaron Van Wachem on one point.
People don’t go to our waterfront just for the view, although it is spectacular. We have many fine restaurants that are attractions in their own right. The food at FIVE was superb and the service was friendly, fast and accommodating.
As my wife and I were finishing our meal and the rays of the setting sun danced playfully across the cheese grater, imagine our delight when a statue in the background suddenly came to life with an array of ever-changing colours, reminding us that you can’t beat nature, but you can certainly beat it up.
