MLA defended from forces of recall

Dear editor,

Don McRae

Dear editor,

With the new year come renewed threats to remove the Comox Valley’s MLA from office. As a young voter in this riding, I wish to offer my objections to Don McRae’s recall.

The recall initiative is a response to last year’s introduction of the HST. Unable to convince the government to refrain from implementing the tax, the Fight HST organizers are determined to remove government MLAs, hoping to replace them with people more to their liking.

The ethicality of this reaction is very questionable.

The HST’s opponents have voiced their opinions and received the government’s answer. Their dislike for that answer may be a reason for dissatisfied citizens to vote out their MLAs or offer themselves as candidates in the next election, but to recall politicians who are doing what they think is best for British Columbia is unacceptable.

Our own MLA has worked hard for the Comox Valley since his election. He decided to support the HST because, in his opinion, it will help the provincial economy. That is why we elected him: we wanted someone to make decisions, whether we agree with them or not, that are for the good of our Valley and province.

Do I like everything that Mr. McRae has done? No. Do I support all of his party’s positions? No. But has he performed well in the office to which we elected him? Yes. And he can be assured of my support as he continues to work on our behalf.

Brendon Johnson,

Courtenay
