New semester at LSS

Exams are over, and for LSS students, second semester is already here. It’s time to get some fresh air and start all over again, so grab a friend and check out some of these great upcoming events.

Rec Room Events

The annual Sex Drugs and Rock N’ Roll youth forum is finally here. Listen to a live band and snack on some pizza and more, while getting sexual health information from an expert. Event is Feb. 11 so get your tickets early at the FJCC. Tickets are $2 in advance or $4 at the door. The forum is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Want to go to Mt. Washington? The Rec Room travels there Feb. 26. Spots are filling up, so sign up with Danielle at the FJCC — ASAP.

Anyone would be lying if they said they didn’t like painting on the walls when they were a kid. Now, the Rec Room lets you paint to your heart’s content, without getting in trouble. The Rec Room is painting a mural on the back stair well of the FJCC. If you want to take a beloved pastime up again, talk to Danielle at the Rec Room.

It’s something easy, but it makes a huge difference in someone’s life. Donate to the food bank. Many Ladysmith citizens rely on its services everyday. Bring your donation to the FJCC and you can participate in Tim’s Tuesday Swim for free on March 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Valentine’s Day

You either hate it or you love it. Valentine’s Day is just one of those holidays. If you strip away all of the annoying things about it, you’re left with what Valentine’s Day is really about. Behind all the consumerism and cheesy heart strewn gifts, it’s about showing how much you appreciate the people you love. Hug someone that means the world to you. Show them you care this Valentine’s Day, because, sometimes, we forget to do it every day.

Anti-Bullying Day

After a boy at a Nova Scotia high school was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school, two older students bought and distributed 50 pink shirts for other students to wear. It was their way to stand up for him and victims of bullying everywhere. This year marks the fourth annual Anti-Bullying Day that was inspired by this event. Anti-Bullying Day is Feb. 23. Wear pink and raise awareness for everyday victims of bullying.

Drama Fest

A group of LSS students heads to the North Island Regional Drama Festival. The hope of the LSS piece is to inspire and reinforce the power of storytelling through the telling and listening of everyone’s own stories. N.I.R.D fest is at John Barsby this year from Feb. 17 to 19. Keep an eye out for a chance to see the performance before it goes to festival.

Band

An LSS band is off to university. That is, to the University of Idaho for the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. The band travels to the U.S. state this February for three days of concerts, workshops, dancing and more. They will perform and be adjudicated. Guest performers this year include the likes of Nikki Yanofsky, the ALL STAR rhythm section, the Lionel Hampton New York Big Band and more and includes a tribute to Wally ‘Gator’ Watson. The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is Feb. 23 – 26.
