No easy fix for Colleymount Road

This is in response to the letter written by Eileen Benedict, Director of Electoral Area E, titled ‘Burns Lake is not being represented’

Editor:

This is in response to the letter written by Eileen Benedict, Director of Electoral Area E, called ‘Burns Lake is not being represented,’ which was published in the Lakes District News’ April 26 issue.

To start with, we have met several times to discuss this issue [Colleymount Road] over the years and the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) staff have also met many times with you and others to discuss this issue. I understand your concerns and have been working with MOT to try and find solutions.

Significant work has been done to improve Colleymount Road over the years. The challenge with the road is that the base continues to slump due to its location. As has been discussed with you, there is no permanent fix to this issue with the current alignment.

The only long-term solution would be to build an entirely new road up higher away from the lake. This could mean moving people’s homes, causing significant changes to property access among other issues. It’s also a hugely expensive undertaking.

The ministry will continue to invest in Colleymount Road to keep it in as good a shape as possible. I’d be happy to meet with you again to discuss this further if you’d like.

Sincerely,

John Rustad

MLA for Nechako Lakes
