Not much time left to vote

The Northern Lights Wildlife Shelter has only 18 days left for votes. Push them from number eight to number two for the much needed money. Come on Smithers, all what it takes is a few clicks of your mouse!

Anglo-Saxon Britain prized boy babies. A belief that evil spirits would visit the cradle and harm or carry off the boy had the parents use the colour blue, a power colour representing the sky, to scare away the evil. In Germany a widespread legend said that girl babies came from a pink rose (ahem, I knew that!) and it became a custom to dress baby girls in pink.

Remember the Scrabble tournament Feb. 18 at the library. Lots of prizes, fun with words and a great way to shake off ice and snow in a warm atmosphere.

Check out moneysense.ca/savings. They have some good ideas on saving. I seem to be unable to accomplish that feat but have made a resolution to work on it this year.

The BV Museum has announced the launch of the second part (1950-1980) of its three-part exhibition series “Skiing Around Hudson Bay Mountain, 1930-1950, 1950-1980, 1980-Present. This exhibit will run from Feb. 9 to May 13 at the museum. From their press release: “This second part covers the period of organization and transition of skiing on the Bulkley Valley area hills from a ‘seat of the pants’ family fun adventure to corporate ‘pay as you go’, organized, day trips.” This includes lots of history such as Smithers’ outdoor skating rink where Joe Watson, two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Philadelphia Flyers, first learned to skate. It also highlights skiing in the Kemano/Kitimat area, made possible from contributions by renowned local author Einar Blix. Check out the Museum’s Winter Crawl; two other exhibits on display, one at Hetherington & Hooper (Skiing Around Hudson Bay Mountain 1930-1950) and the Swiss Exhibition “Our Little Switzerland, the Swiss Migration to Bulkley Valley 1934-1975” at Schimmel’s Fine Pastry.

Had lunch at my favourite place and was honoured to join in singing Happy Birthday to Alice Doll. It was her actual birth date that day, 90 years. There are 15 other Birthday people during the month of February. A super big Happy Birthday to each and every one of you!

While there I was asked if I could pass on a situation that a woman has and see if we can help. She has quite a few beautiful cards (anniversary, birthday, sympathy) that she has received over the years and needs to find someone who could make some use of them. She hates to just throw them away and I thought there may be a group that could recycle them in crafts or scrapbooking maybe? Give me a call at 250-847-4797 and I can pass on your information to her.

Closing with: Action is the antidote to despair. Joan Baez.
