Nova Scotians looking for information about Ladysmith’s Pictou Road

John Ashton from Pictou County, N.S., is hoping to find out about the origin of the name Pictou Road.

Editor:

We are contacting you from Pictou County, N.S., in regards to obtaining information on the origin of the name Pictou Road, located in your town of Ladysmith.

We have contacted the Ladysmith Historical Society and they have had no luck thus far in finding how Pictou Road was named.

We do know that the name is unique to our Nova Scotia area, being of Mi’kmaq First Nation language which means “place of explosion” because of the ignited coal seams of the area that burned many centuries before.

If any individual or organization in the area has information about this query could they please contact the e-mail address ashtoncreativedesign@yahoo.com.

Thank you.
