Old-time advice for getting around in the snow

Use wood ashes for instant traction for your feet or car wheels

Editor, The Record:

Now that winter has really arrived, perhaps an old-fashioned tip on how to deal with the slippery stuff would be useful to some.

Ashes, from a fireplace or a wood stove, provide instant traction on ice. As they also stick to one’s shoes, this is not a good idea on downtown sidewalks where they will get tracked in to stores, but at private homes they are a real boon, on steps, driveways, and sidewalks — or when a car is stuck on a slippery patch. Try it, you’ll like it!
