Our View: Give one another kindness for Christmas

Our View: Give one another kindness for Christmas

Wishing all our readers a safe, happy holiday season!

Halls have been decked, presents wrapped (well, most of them) and trees are decorated across Langley.

It’s almost time for Christmas.

Here in the northern part of the northern hemisphere, the days are short, and the sun is often hidden behind heavy rainclouds.

It is, literally, the darkest time of the year. Many of us head off to work or school in the pre-dawn hours, and arrive home long after the street lights have cast their blue-white glow over the rain slicked roads.

It’s no surprise that this season sees people draw closer together, family and friends, gathering around a fire or swaddled in warm, ridiculous sweaters decorated with reindeer.

We have a responsibility to one another at this time of year, to provide a little light for one another.

So please, remember in the rush of buying that last present, of hustling to the elementary school concert, of brushing the pine needles out from under the tree, to spread a little kindness in your wake.

Spare a smile for the retail staff, your neighbours, your coworkers. Offer that helping hand if you can, or that dollar in the donation bin for a worthy cause. It might be the most important present you give anyone this year.

And remember to give yourself a little kindness too.

Read a book, drink some egg nog or hot chocolate, or watch that old favourite movie with someone you love. Lean back, take a deep breath, and let yourself enjoy the season’s joys.

Here’s wishing everyone a safe, happy holidays!
