OUR VIEW: Tide is turning toward equality

On International Women's Day, some women in Surrey simply need our help

Today is International Women’s Day and it is the most important one yet. We say that because the voices calling for equality are louder than ever.

This year’s United Nations’ theme is ‘Time is Now,’ recognizing the activism that is changing women’s lives.

Something has changed since this time last year. The Me Too and Time’s Up movements resonated and empowered women to speak up and forced people to take notice.

Change might be a slow process in a lot of places, but here, it doesn’t have to be – not in Surrey in 2018, especially when it concerns such a fundamental right.

Of course we’ve all valued equality – it’s just that we might not have spent enough time thinking about what that means. Well, women are telling us. Across the province and around the world, women are marching. So are those who support, love, value and respect women.

And beyond empowerment and equality, some women in Surrey simply need our help.

This week, consider supporting organization’s such as the Surrey Women’s Centre or Elizabeth Fry Society. There’s also Atira Women’s Resource Society, which we told you about in Wednesday’s issue. Atira is transforming a seedy Surrey motel into housing to help vulnerable women in our community heal.

Our support for these Surrey groups should come alongside a commitment to modern attitudes about gender equality and women’s rights.

The women of Surrey deserve it.
