Dear editor,
This is about an eight-year-old boy who was hit by a car last week at the corner of First Street and Rod and Gun Club Road in Courtenay.
He was taken by ambulance to hospital with a broken leg and other minor injuries.
He and his sister were coming back from school; they were two doors from home. The driver was not speeding excessively, but was startled and had not enough time to stop completely, when the child veered out in front of him to cross the street. The child was wearing a helmet.
Please, drivers, slow down.
This stretch of First Street is loaded with speeders on a long, straight stretch of road, seemingly out of the way of police monitoring. We and our neighbours were just talking about going to City council regarding installing speed bumps on this portion of the street.
Dozens of kids reside in the area, and it’s just a matter of time before somebody gets seriously injured or killed. We were blessed here this time.
Kurtis was a really brave little guy — he dragged himself off the street to safety and shed only a couple of tears as he waited patiently for his parents to arrive.
A special thanks to all of the local neighbours and the off-duty firefighter and the paramedic who who stopped to help on their way home from work.
Kimberley McMullen,
Courtenay
