Police condemn kick, however, do the same

To the Editor,

Re: Online fight could lead to arrests, April 2.

A police spokesman describes a video-taped attack involving young teenage girls in which a victim is “repeatedly kicked after falling to the ground”.

We can only concur with the spokesman when he says, “As police officers, it’s disturbing to see brawls of this nature involving young persons.”

Unfortunately, just last year we saw a videotape in which it was a policeman kicking a person on the ground. And when there was a public outcry, the offending policeman was found blameless, exonerated, with a claim that kicking a person on the ground constituted correct police procedure for subduing someone.

The police are now in a position of saying, in effect, “do as we say, not as we do”.

Regrettably, since ‘actions speak louder than words’, the youth in the attack may be emulating the example of police conduct.
