Dear editor,

Re: Directors squabble over transit costs (Aug. 1 Record)

Thank goodness the Comox Valley Regional District finally passed an increase in spending to “fund 4,000 extra hours of transit service.” Improved service will significantly reduce the long lines of cars idling twice a day at the 5th and 17th Street bridges and twice a day in our school zones. It may also eliminate the need for a third bridge costing many times more than the $400,000 required to improve transit.

But, promotion is the key to success. Now that the CVRD has made this decision, the next step will be to sell it to the public. Promote the transit system as leaving driving up to the bus driver; promote the system as time saved to read your favourite book; promote the system as a means to de-escalate from a difficult day at work or school; promote the system as a means of decreasing our carbon footprint. Successful promotion of a truly functional transit system that actually serves people and the community is essential.
