This coming Monday, March 28th will be a time to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our local Houston and District Chamber of Commerce.

For a half a century the Chamber has promoted Houston, its local businesses and all that our little community has to offer.

I just went on the website and was quite impressed with that too.

Many might think that the Chamber office is a place where the Home of the World’s Largest Flyrod and grizzly bear is housed, surrounded by beautiful gardens (that I may have mentioned once or twice in the past) and where the tourists convene on their travels.

It is much more than that, and has been for years.

The Chamber has had a Board of Directors that meets every month to rally Houston and its business members to promote our town – they are a makeup of local business owners, members, and the hard working folk that believe in Houston and continue to work hard to promote it as such.

Did you know that there has been a Sullivan (of Sullivan Motor Products fame) sitting in one position or another on the Chamber Board in all of its 50 years?

That’s dedication and community pride at its very best I tell you.

The aforementioned Monday afternoon events will see a cake cutting ceremony, and a whole lot of people there to reminisce about our town.

I plan to be there, as I myself worked at the Chamber of Commerce in what feels like a thousand years ago.

My fondest memories were the delightful people I got to work with and alongside, and the numbers of tourists I got to meet and greet at the Travel Information Centre.

It was there that I really got to know local business people in town, and the enthusiasm and positivity that they emulated, trying to make a go of owning a business in Houston.

You’ll be able to look at pictures of years and Trade Shows gone by, and see how much fun we’ve had over the years.

I’m looking forward to going, and I hope to see everyone there.
