QB waterfront plan

We’re very enthusiastic about the idea of a pier if put somewhere between the public washrooms and the Captains Inn. We have often enjoyed the pier at White Rock, B.C. and the one in Sidney, B.C. A pier would be a wonderful addition to Qualicum Beach. Especially if it is softly lit at night for evening strolls.

Add concrete steps to the beach closer to the first cabin near Bay Street. This would be an ideal spot for access to the beach given the recent installation of the crosswalk.

Forbid parking on the north side of the Island Hwy. W. from 2919 to 2935 Island Highway West. Home owners to park on south side. This area is really the only area that can be of some concern for pedestrians given that they often have to walk onto the road in order to get around parked vehicles. With this in place there would be no need for a walk-way to be constructed in front of these private residences.

Forbid all heavy truck traffic. No extra large vehicles, over a certain weight, should be permitted on the Island Highway at any time in Qualicum Beach unless making a delivery to a Qualicum Beach address.

Clearly identify a walking path behind the Captain’s Inn to the empty lot by using white painted lines similar to that used on crosswalks. Or perhaps a slightly raised path that vehicles could still drive over to park. Simple, yet effective. And certainly a great deal less expensive, and less invasive (environmentally speaking) than a new walkway in front of all of these properties.

Add one of those ‘Your Speed’ signs to encourage people to obey the speed limit. Far too many people race along this part of the highway.

With these ideas in place money could be set aside to deal with any future problems brought about by erosion, etc. It should also be noted that the owners of private homes and businesses along the beach are responsible for their part of the waterfront. Not Qualicum Beach taxpayers.
