Quesnel’s volunteers deserve so much praise

Lindsay Chung writes about how impressive the Billy Barker Days and Quesnel Rodeo volunteers are

There’s a well-used Margaret Mead quote that says: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

The more cynical among us could perhaps argue this quote has been over-used, but there is a reason it is used so much, and the point that a small group can do big things can never be highlighted enough.

We see it all the time, particularly when we look at all the amazing events and activities that take place in our community. Small groups of committed, hard-working volunteers are the backbone of so many important events, as we saw this past weekend with the Billy Barker Days Festival and the Quesnel Rodeo. So many people worked so hard behind the scenes for many, many months to pull of these great events, and they deserve much gratitude and praise. Each event has a core group of volunteers who plan the event, and then many more volunteers come on board to help during the weekend.

It’s no small feat to put on a free four-day family festival or a three-day rodeo, and the amount of work that the volunteers have put in before, during and after these two major events cannot be emphasized enough.

Both of these events were very well-attended and brought in people from near and far. And I think it’s pretty safe to say the Quesnel Rodeo and Billy Barker Days have helped make Quesnel a destination for many people and have had a significant impact on shaping our community.

Congratulations and thank you to all the volunteers involved in the Billy Barker Days Festival and the Quesnel Rodeo.
