Dear editor,
I am stunned.
I moved here, recently, partly because I felt this was a decent place. A place where people revered what was valuable. Who understood that history is one of our most cherished commodities.
I just learned about the demolishing of Mack Laing’s original home.
A place that Heritage BC called “irreplaceable.” I went to see it. A pile of rubble with a beautiful view of the water. Who would do such a thing?
I read the plaque in the park, surrounding the area. A plaque which venerated Mr. Laing as a leader, in fact one of the most important leaders, in the history of not only this area, but the whole country of Canada. His plaque quotes him as saying people should value simple, beautiful things. I walked through the Mack Laing park, a most beautiful place.
Then I came upon the wreckage, the horrific destruction. It made me sick. Have people no sense of history? No sense of decency?
I learned that Heritage Canada was willing to help pay expenses which would have defrayed the costs of refurbishment and upkeep.
My son is 29. I am glad I don’t have to explain to him as a child who and why this was done. Frankly I would not know how to explain the unexplainable. And we wonder where some young people get their no respect attitudes from? From us.
Now I understand better why Quebec has “Je me souviens” (I remember) on their license plate.
We could do worse.
