There is a counter at the post office where post office box holders sort their mail. Into the waste baskets go empty envelopes, flyers and junk mail.
Often when I go to pick up my mail, I notice that both waste baskets are overflowing with paper.
Box holders may be surprised to learn that not one piece of paper from these waste baskets is recycled. It all goes into the garbage. The staff at the counter told me the reason the paper is not recycled is because the post office has no control over what people put in the waste baskets. Fair enough – who wants apple cores in their paper recycling?
Vernon has a really good reputation for recycling paper so I would like to suggest that anyone who receives mail at the post office take their empty envelopes, flyers and junk mail home with them and recycle them, along with their own recyclable paper. Let’s not give the post office anything to throw away other than legitimate garbage.
