Dear Editor,
There are many on-going discussions regarding the new landfill that is needed for Terrace. I hope that during these discussions emphasis will be placed on looking ahead at what the best possible options will be available for people who are disposing of their trash.
What we throw away here is what other people in many places of the world fight over to have.
We should have recycling bins at the dump so people may sort their trash as they are creating it at home.
It will be easier for people if they have already sorted their trash at home. I know many who already do this now, and it will become even more necessary in the future.
Since no one is taking glass at the moment, I have a stock pile. It has occurred to me that this represents an economic niche for some bright person to fill.
Glass has been a valued commodity for thousands of years. It is a neutral, non-toxic material that may take many forms and be reused again and again. Surely this is something that is worth doing for ourselves.
I hope that there is a bright hopeful person in our community that will also see the potential for developing some sort of use for this very common, widely available commodity.
I am sure that when the current landfill was opened people were not that concerned with world environmental issues.
However, this is a lesson in how fast the world can change.
It is always better to plan for, imagine what it will look like, years from now, not just what is needed at the moment.
Danelle Feist,
