When I decided to volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society back in 2010, I didn’t know exactly what I was getting into, just that I felt this overwhelming need to do something to fight back and to pay it forward.
Serious illness, whether endured by a loved one or personally, will change your perspective on pain, suffering, life and death. My connection with the crushing weight of cancer opened a huge new window in my life. I now see conquering this disease is within our reach and the sooner the better. As a community we already have made an enormous contribution in the fight to eradicate cancer.
Through participation in events such as Relay for Life, annual campaigns such as daffodil sales or door-to-door canvassing, and personal giving, we have supported considerable improvements in cancer care, research, prevention, and support.
Generous local monetary gifts from years past have led to the discovery of better treatments and medications for today’s patients, and ensure that practical and emotional support is available to those going through cancer.
Prevention initiatives have shown us that healthy lifestyle and safe public policy decrease the risk of developing certain cancers.
Going forward, I realized my responsibility to those who have sacrificed physically, emotionally and financially in my community. Using some of my time and energy to volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life seemed a good place to start.
I now see how vital volunteers are in keeping advancements in motion. New volunteers are always needed to join those already in the battle.
I strongly encourage those of you who may be hesitant, or feel you don’t have the time or energy, to give just a little and see where it goes from there.
