Families First is the motto of our B.C. government. At election time, many people must have believed them. But not today.
These are very tough times for families in B.C., including our own family where grandson No. 2 is excited to begin Kindergarten and grandson No. 1, who loves school so far, cannot wait to start Grade 2. And, of course, both parents work.
You have to wonder about the future for kids starting school in B.C. Will the problems of the past three decades go on forever? It is time that the B.C. government restored funding to the classrooms and invested in the future. Think long term. Think about the benefits of investing in young people and future families.
Teachers have been in the courts for 12 years with their government. In 2002, then-minister of education Christy Clark ripped pages out of a legal, negotiated contract. That contract had supports for students and teachers. The teachers’ case went to court twice; both times teachers’ rights were upheld and the government’s actions deemed unconstitutional.
Let’s restore class size limits so teachers can give every child more individual attention. Let’s provide more assessment and support for all students so every child gets a better chance to succeed. Let’s really put Families First and invest in the future of our kids. Write to your MLA and insist on a fair resolution today. Our kids are depending on us.
