Dear editor,
I am writing over concerns on the closing of Duncan Bay Mainline by 3L Developments.
I fully understand that this is now private property and it is within their rights to do so. It does, however, present some serious issues for safety and residential access to Forbidden Plateau residents.
Hundreds of people have used this road access for emergency services, work, play and recreation for decades, and failure of the landowner and the CVRD to come up with a plan could have more impact than just inconvenience.
Where is all the logging traffic from Comox Lake going to reroute?
How are the hundreds of loads of gravel coming from the pits just north of Plateau Road going to get into Courtenay unless they go down to Condensory Bridge and through the heart of Courtenay?
There is also the huge number of recreation users that will also have to reroute through Courtenay, adding to what is already becoming a traffic nightmare.
Then there is the biggest concern of all: fire protection services will be forced to access Forbidden Plateau residents by travelling through the heart of that downtown traffic jam to get across Condensory Bridge, and adding about 17 per cent greater travel distance at a slower speed in the event of a fire. If I owned one of the more than 80 houses in that area, I would be very concerned about the extra delays in emergency services.
I would highly recommend that all parties involved get together immediately to come up with a solution better than this road closure.
Larry Epp,
Courtenay
