Some years ago Saanich council approved and built a road upgrade to Derby Road between Shelbourne Street and the Cedar Hill Golf Course. It obviously made it easier for traffic to reach the golf course and it is far safer than it was before.
Now Saanich council has approved an upgrade to Doncaster Road from the junction of Cedar Hill Road and Doncaster Road up to Derby Road. This operation has now been going on for longer than I care to remember, but when finished will be a much improved road. However, I find it hard to believe that Doncaster Road between Derby Road and Jennifer Road continues to be ignored. Why?
This section of road is by far the most dangerous road to drive on. It is narrow, steep, and has an open ditch on a large portion of the west side of the road. At approximately halfway down the hill the road narrows and a sign says 30 km/h.
There is no sidewalk, so parents have to be very careful when walking their children down, or up Doncaster to access the lane that leads down to Doncaster elementary school. Personally I do not live right on Doncaster Road, for which I am grateful. In the last 26 years the only thing I have seen done to this stretch of road is an occasional patch added or a water pipe leak repaired.
Lastly, golfers also drive up Jennifer Road from Cedar Hill Cross Road and down the aforementioned piece of Doncaster Road to Derby Road to access the golf course. I really believe that up to now, it has been a miracle that no one has been seriously injured or maimed on this stretch of road.
