Since moving to the Island in 2015, I have noticed something disturbing. I have never come across so many pedestrians, of all age groups, walking on the wrong side of the road, whether it be in Qualicum Beach, Parksville, or Nanoose Bay.
One day I had the opportunity, as it was safe, to pull alongside a young lady with earbuds in and asked her if she knew she was on the wrong side. She didn’t.
I explained to her how important it is that she walk facing traffic. It means she can see oncoming cars, move over if possible, and be able to make eye contact with drivers so she knows they see her. As I drove away, she moved to the proper side of the road.
We live in areas with great walking trails, but there are times when the roadway is necessary. Yes, we have very quiet traffic but still, one wandering step and a driver not noticing could put someone into the line of traffic. This also goes for pets walking alongside you.
Parents, explain this to your kids, both young and teenage. And adults, set an example please.
