Re: Shelter Closes, but now what?
After some resistance when it was first opened, the downtown emergency shelter has proved to be a resounding success.
It provided much needed emergency accommodation and warm meals for some of our most needy citizens and at the same time it has reduced crime, resulted in fewer emergency calls and fewer visits to the hospital. Not only didn’t it cost taxpayers one cent, it must have saved us a considerable amount of money.
I think it is irrefutable that we need a year round shelter of this sort. It seems it is a Win / Win situation that saves lives and money.
You can judge a community by how it treats it least advantaged members – let’s step up and be compassionate and kind and provide a permanent, low barrier, emergency shelter in downtown Campbell River.
