Re: Speed control on Whatcom Road and Mountain Drive.
I think speed control bumps, as those along O Ave. would be an effective, less costly answer to controlling speeding.
How much would a few blobs of asphalt cost to spread out?
Our mayor stated that cars speed down McKee Road as well, but that is a straighter road without the amount of housing alongside, and is not as steep as Whatcom.
The downward slope starts at the top of the new connector.
By the time a car reaches the first lights at Regal Park Way, which is situated around a blind corner, the potential for a high rate of speed is great.
There are five more corners on the downhill route before reaching the freeway.
The potential for a high speed crash or a car losing control is high.
Bumps at the major intersections – at the very least Lower Sumas Mountain Road and Whatcom would work in decreasing speed.
I fear it will be only a matter of time before an accident occurs, bringing back memories of the deaths on the Mission bridge, and two cars sailing off the slope of Whatcom and McKee due to the dragging of feet by officials in addressing road safety issues.
