Relay for Life and preparing for grad

Submitted by Claire Cartwright

Spring has sprung at Stanley Humphries Secondary School. This month the staff and students of SH are busy with their last quarter of the year. Grad season starts soon and the grad executive has been working along COVID-19 guidelines, so the Class of 2021 can have a fun and safe graduation.

Relay for Life

The preparation for Relay for Life at SHSS has gone insanely well this month. At first, the school’s fundraising goal was $2,500, however, the school community raised that amount in the first week of donation collection. Now the Relay for Life goal is $5,000! In order to make fundraising more entertaining SHSS student council made a thermometer that is hung in the cross halls. Each time the school raises money past a certain milestone, a teacher does a challenge.

Here are the challenges:

$250 – Ms. Hainsworth wears a dress to school

$500 – Ms. Coombs gets dressed by her class

$700 – Mme. Shaw dresses as Flash the Coyote for a day

$1,000 – Ms. Oakley cuts 14 inches of her hair for cancer

$1,250 – Ms. Hughes gets pied

$1,500 – Mr. Wall and Mr. Perren waxes arms and legs

$1,750 – Mr. Leitch shaves head

$2,000 – Mr. Richards gets his head shaved by Mme. St. Jacques

$2,250 – Ms. Dempster cuts 10 in. of her hair for cancer

$2,500 – Mr. McKay and Mme. St. Jacques give each other a makeover

$3,000 – Ms. Painter dyes her hair

$3,500 – Mr. Turner wears a dress to school

$4,000 – Mr. Gregory wears a wig every day for a week

$4,500 – Mr. Cox eats a really, really spicy pepper

$5,000 – Student council does the ice bucket challenge

With this list you can see that SHSS has some of the best teachers out there that are willing to do anything for cancer. SHSS has also some of the best students who are willing to donate in order to not only make these challenges happen, but to raise money for cancer as well. Relay for Life happens on June 4, keep those donations coming SHSS!

Grad scavenger hunt

On May 19, the Class of 2021 participated in a COVID-friendly scavenger hunt across downtown Castlegar. The activity was organized by the parent grad executive and, boy, did they ever do a great job! The grads were separated into three groups, each starting at different times. At school they were given their first clue which led them to Kinsmen Park. From there the next clue led them to Millennium Park and from that location they were off to Zuckerberg Island! At the Zuckerberg house the executive parents set up tents. Underneath these tents were enough gift bags for every grad that participated. Grads got to each pick a gift bag, almost every grad got a blue decal on their koozie, which meant they received a $20 gift card. If a grad received a different koozie they received one of the major prizes! Local photographer, Lee Orr, was also present to capture some awesome pictures.

Major Prize Winners:

Owen Morgan – Bose speaker courtesy of Grant Thornton

Chloe Coleman – MacBook courtesy of Mercer

Alyssa Wasney – MacBook courtesy of Interfor

Salem Furman – $200 Playmor Power G/C courtesy of Playmor Power Products

Kaitlyn Quiding – Retro Minifridge courtesy of The Brick

Huge thank you to all of the businesses that donated to the scavenger hunt and to Lee Orr for being a photographer-extraordinaire. Also another huge thank you to the parent grad executive team that made this possible. Your hours upon hours of hard work do not go unnoticed, you guys are superheroes! The grads appreciate you more than words can say.

Grade 8 student wins Legion prize

Every year, the Royal Canadian Legion offers youth the opportunity to express themselves through art or words around the theme of Remembrance Day. Entries are reviewed and the best in each area are rewarded with a certificate and prize presented by a local branch member. This year, the Castlegar-Robson Branch #170, recognized the stunning art work of grade 8 SHSS student Erica Sandland. Erica’s work was submitted to the zone contest where she placed second in the intermediate category. Jean Bonin was happy to be able to present Erica with her well-deserved certificate and bursary. We are very proud of Erica’s work on her poster and look forward to watching this young artist develop through the next few years.

Book recommendation from Claire

This month I’m recommending one of my favourite summer reads — The Unhoneymooners. This book follows the most unlikely pair on a honeymoon that isn’t really their own. It is such a quick read and really makes you feel like you’re at the beach in Maui. I loved it so much I read it in a day.

Treat people with kindness and go get your vaccine.

Riddle of the month:

Why do bananas use sunscreen?

Because they peel!
